One of the questions I get asked about frequently is where to buy hardware. From cabinets to door knobs to towel hooks and beyond, hardware is something you may already know I’m obsessed with. It really is the jewelry of a space and I don’t believe they should be an afterthought.

I had a realization that designing your home is significantly easier if you have the right sources on hand. Trades and suppliers, of course (necessary!) but also just knowing where to shop can help tremendously.

There’s a lot of gatekeeping in the interior design world, but I’ve always been of the belief that there’s more than enough to go around. That no harm can come from sharing sources. So far, this approach has worked for me really wonderfully. So here we are!

SHOP HARDWARE:

If you’ve been reading for any length of time you may have noticed that my love for Emtek runs deep (you can see where I used em here and here!), but there are many others that I use often that deserve a little air time, too. In light of sharing insider “secrets”, this is where to buy cabinet hardware (and beyond). The stuff that’s been designer approved (in my humble opinion, of course).

If keeping your home neat and tidy is as important to you as it is to me, I have a really great (and easy) tidy home tip to share. I do, however, want to preface this by saying that if your home is not neat and tidy, or if you aren’t one to care about these things, that’s incredible.

I have so much respect for those who can chill out about stuff that I know, factually, is not the end of the world. But as a visual person who can get overstimulated easily, having things in their place is particularly important to me. That said, it’s also not something I want to dedicate my whole life to maintaining (I’m very much in a season of wanting to just go slow and be present and *live*). So I’m always on the hunt for little tricks and ways I can maintain a tidy home, without much effort.

All that to say, though I have my issues with TikTok, I have found some wildly valuable nuggets within their pages. Some that have, at the risk of sounding dramatic, even changed my life. And today I wanted to share one of them. It really has helped me keep my home significantly tidier (without any extra effort).

AN EASY TIDY HOME TIP:

I believe the woman who originally shared this thought is named Tracy McCubbin. Her neat and tidy home tip is as simple as repeating to yourself “don’t put it down, put it away“. I find I now almost sing it to myself as I’m going about daily tasks. Like when I’m tempted to put my dish in the sink in lieu of the dishwasher… Or leave my pen on my desk instead of the cute little cup holder I bought just for him… If it takes less than two minutes to do, I try to tackle it right away. This goes for emails and work stuff too, by the way. It actually saves me a step – and that item is checked off my future to-do list in the end.

I am by NO MEANS perfect. I give myself a ton of grace and leeway. But I’ve really found it to be a valuable way to help keep my home neat and tidy (or as neat and tidy as it can be in this season of life with a pre-schooler).

Do you have any tips or tricks that help you stay on top of messes? I’m still figuring out all the little life hacks along the way and am all ears.

When it came to renovating our kitchen, I was originally pretty set on using real marble for our countertops and slab backsplash. I just absolutely love the soul that comes with a natural material that ages and patinas over time. But after some serious contemplation I quickly realized that with a toddler underfoot, and the fact that this isn’t our forever home, we just weren’t in a marble stage of life. (Case in point: the other day my two year old excitedly called me into the kitchen to show me how she had used her ripe, juicy, blueberries to draw “snake trails” all over the counter – ha). When it comes down to it, marble is a porous material that etches and stains quite easily, even if it’s properly honed.

Shop the Post:

{“look mama, blueberry snakes!”}

In this case, longevity and resale played a major factor in our decision making. To get that well-patina’d marble look, you simply need years of regular use. Those first few etches hurt and stand out like a sore thumb, but overtime they begin to tell a story. And we simply aren’t planning on sticking around long enough to give our counters the chance to sell said experience.

Thus began the hunt for the best marble counter alternative on the market. I am super picky about this sort of thing but I’m really excited to announce that I’ve found it. As you know I’m not one to gatekeep, so if you’re looking for the best marble counter alternative around it’s none other than Hanstone’s quartz in their Montauk finish.

It has incredible depth, plus just the right amount of veining, in a completely random pattern that’s innate to real marble. It has already tricked just about everyone that has come through our home into thinking it’s the real deal. And because it’s a non porous surface, it has stood up to all toddler related blueberry atrocities (and then some). I just love that it gives the exact marble look that I’m after, without any of the grey hairs.

Going forward, it will be my go-to for all client projects that are faced with the same dilemma – wanting the marble look but not the upkeep or patina. It’s a solution I’m excited to have in my back pocket from here on out.

For all of our kitchen sources (including paint colours), scroll to the bottom of this post.

I want to thank Hanstone for partnering with me on this project. It means the world and it’s an honour to house their products in our home.

Cabinet hardware is one of those little things that often goes overlooked during a renovation. It is, however, is akin to the jewelry of a space – instantly bringing a little sparkle. And though the aesthetics are important, the functional component here is huge. It’s one of the kitchen items that we interact with most frequently in a kitchen. They’re constantly being touched, pulled, and prodded, and I believe it deserves thoughtful attention.

In recent years I’ve begun sourcing and placing my cabinet hardware early on, often even designing an entire kitchen around my findings. In summary: when it comes to good design, picking and placing your cabinet hardware shouldn’t really be an afterthought. But this doesn’t have to be stressful! I have an easy cabinet hardware placement guide that I’m going to share below.

In the past, I’ve talked about how in most cases I feel like kitchens should have a mixture of cabinet knobs and pulls, and that continues to be true. But I’ve never really expanded on exactly where you should place each one so that they make the most sense for your space, aesthetically and functionally.

I’ve partnered with Emtek & Schaub to divulge some of my “insider secrets” to cabinet hardware placement. Emtek is a purveyor of some of the most beautiful luxury hardware on the market; we used them in our kitchen reno (my mom’s too!) Of course, there are oodles of cabinet hardware placement variations out there, and design rules are often meant to be broken. But if you want to go for a classic, timeless kitchen look, the following four cabinet hardware placement guides will never lead you astray.

An Easy Cabinet Hardware Placement Guide

N•1
| Pulls on Lowers,
Knobs On Uppers |

NOTES
:: I prefer smaller knobs (1″ or so)
:: Place knobs 3″ from bottom of cabinet
:: Place pulls 3″ from top of cabinet
:: For drawers wider than 24″ use two smaller pulls

| Pulls on Uppers,
Knobs On Lowers |

NOTES
:: I prefer smaller knobs (1″ or so)
:: Place knobs 3″ from top of cabinet
:: Place pull 3″ from bottom of cabinet
:: Scale your pulls – larger cabinets get longer pulls, shorter cabinets get shorter pulls
:: For drawers wider than 24″, use two knobs

N•3
| Pulls on Cabinets,
Knobs on Drawers |

NOTES
:: I prefer smaller knobs (1″ or so)
:: Scale your pulls – larger cabinets get longer pulls, shorter cabinets get shorter pulls
:: For drawers wider than 24″, use two knobs

N•4
| Pulls on Drawers,
Knobs on Cabinets |

NOTES
:: I prefer smaller knobs (1″ or so)
:: For drawers wider than 24″, add two smaller pulls
:: Exception: If you have a full height or large cabinet door (ie a pantry), you can consider using a pull instead of a knob

If you’re on the hunt for cabinet hardware of your own, I encourage you to check out Emtek or their sister company Schaub. They’ve made a name for themselves in the industry for good reason. I’ve used them abundantly over the years, on sponsored project and non-sponsored ones alike, and stand firmly behind their luxe hand-feel and premium quality. It’s a joy to use them all around.

Thank you to Emtek & Shaub for partnering with me on this post
